Day 20 (Bay of Islands) - Saturday 8th October 2016

Leaping dolphins
Found: a seal, a pod of dolphins, and...my sea legs!

So, the two-hour whale-spotting trip was a dress rehearsal for today's four-hour catamaran trip around the Bay of Islands. Lesson learned from last time - I went straight to the back of the boat. As this part of the Dolphin Seeker was exposed to the elements, it meant I'd get plenty of fresh, sea air as well as not being subjected to too much swell.

Hood: improvised sick bag
We weren't provided with sick bags, so I eyed up the coat hood of the man in the seat in front of me as a makeshift precaution (I like to plan ahead 😉). Thankfully, I didn't need to resort to such a drastic measure, and I'm sure the man in front was thankful, too! 😁

At first, we only saw one lone dolphin, which lingered at the front of the catamaran so I couldn't get any pictures. We headed out to the Hole in the Rock, and the sea was calm enough for us to pass through the hole. We even spotted a seal on the rocks opposite.

On our journey back, we came across a pod of dolphins. They swam along in our wake, leaping out of the water. I sure chose a prime spot for the viewing!

Afterwards, we had lunch and then headed back to Skycity Hotel in Auckland for our overnight stay.

And speaking of dress rehearsals, I'll give a shout-out to The Kingswood Players who have theirs next weekend. They're performing 'Ladies Day' by Amanda Whittington on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd October at 7.30pm (Saturday matinee at 2.30pm) at Kingswood Community Centre. Tel: 0777 205 6562 for tickets, or visit the website: www.kingswoodplayers.org  I went to a rehearsal before I came on holiday, and it's a shame I'll miss seeing the performances themselves as it promises to be a fantastic production.
